The members of the board of directors of nonprofit organizations wear many different roles, but governance is a crucial responsibility. It is responsible for ensuring that the charity is in compliance with the law, has solid financial management guidelines and stays on track in order to achieve its objectives. Unlike for-profit companies there is no ownership stake in charitable organizations, and nonprofits rely on volunteer boards to manage them effectively and ensure that they are financially sustainable in the long term.

Non-profits employ various models for board governance, and some even mix several of them to meet their specific needs. Selecting the right model is crucial to building an effective board. It will help an organization stay focused on their mission and create a culture of transparency, accountability and innovation.

The Management Team Model is the most popular board governance for non-profit organizations. In this model, the board delegates tasks to committees and staff members delegated which cover a variety of responsibilities such as human resources, finance planning, programs, and human resources. The board retains its leadership role board room in hiring and managing the executive director.

A Patron Board Model is another common model. This type of board has an abundance of wealthy donors that act as the board and have high levels of trust in and confidence in the CEO to manage the company. The board is not involved in the day-today operations however, they meet regularly to ensure that the CEO is keeping them updated on the company’s activities.
